Utagawa (歌川) family name, Taiga (大雅) first name

Taiga Utagawa was a pre-war and post-war artist. Famous as an illustrator for children's magazines under the name Tomohiko Oka, he also created adult illustrations under the pen name Taiga Utagawa starting in 1956. Then from the 1970s, Utagawa became a researcher into the Tachikawa School of Buddhism.

Biography

Cover of "Femme Fatale Sketchbook."

1917: Born in the Nicho-Machi, Shitaya ward of Tokyo.[※ 1]

1939: Becomes an apprentice of Tokutaro Tamai.

1940: Publishes illustrations in "Girls Club." Partners with Hitsuhiko Otaguro on historical reading materials. Starts using the pen name Tomohiko Oka.[※ 1]

1947: Publishes "Femme Fatale Sketchbook."

1950: Authors the picture story "Great Pegasus Shooting Star" first serialized in "Fun Book."

1951: Starting with "Boys and Girls Tankai," Utagawa publishes a number of illustrated stories.[1]

1956: Starts using the name "Utagawa" with "Secret Village Notebook" published in Weekly Manga TIMES."

1958: Publishes the mystery picture story "Will-o-the-whisp Beach" in Uramado.

1960: With the publication with "Kurama Tengu" in Boy's Book, Utagawa gives up using the name "Utagawa" and retires from working in children's periodicals.

1970: Illustrates Shinji Soya's "Exorcist."

1970s: Devotes himself to tantra in the Tachikawa School of esoteric Buddhism.

1972: Releases "Red Night - Large Penis" and "From an Exhibit of Detailed Lamaism Pictures" in "SM Sekai."

1972: Illustrates cover of "Confidential Documents SM 21."

1973: Devotes himself to esoteric Buddhism and releases "Introduction to Esoteric Rituals -- Tantra."

Interesting Points

Juan Maeda was a student of Utagawa.

Utagawa rents out rooms to story illustrators with Soji Yamakawa, Shigeru Komatsuzaki, Tetzuji Fukushima and Takeo Nagamatsu.
